Monthly Meeting and Training

The ASRA Board would like to invite you to attend a very important and informative meeting:

Wednesday - March 23 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Abe’s (Arlington Indoor) 2901 Eagle Dr., Grand Prairie, 75052

We are going to try something different for our meeting.  You know that we should remain teachable for the duration of our referee career, however, many of us are at different stages.  We asked around, trying to find out what would you like us to discuss.  Based on the feedback from you we will have 3 different topics for you to chose from.  Pick one or two of interest to you.  Each topic will be about 20 minutes in length.  The people who are presenting/leading the discussion will be happy stick around for questions after the meeting.

1.   Pre game and penalty kicks -   Many of us are visual learners and once we make a major mistake on the field, we rarely repeat that mistake.  PK’s, because they are not part of every game, we tend to forget some of the mechanics, the restarts, etc.  What should you include in your pregame?  Discussion to be led by - TBA

2.   Sideline behavior - When referees ignore problem sideline behavior, it can create 80 minutes of extra extra distractions as you try to manage your games.  Some have no clue how to diffuse comments that spill over into the game... If you take part in this topic, be prepared to role play.  Discussion led by former National Referee - Kyle Borne

3.   Upgrading? - Excellent... hear from an assessor what he/she looks for.  Hear the criteria needed for a successful upgrade.  Not ready to upgrade yet?  Find out what you need to be working on to get the point where someone says, "You should upgrade.  You are ready.".  Discussion led by NTX State Instructor/Assessor/Referee - Bob Collins

Snacks, drinks and door prizes are provided courtesy of your ASRA membership.  Please mark your calendar to attend this informative evening.

We will also have some "How to Write a Misconduct Report" handouts.  It is very important to know the how to’s of this part of our referee administrative responsibilities.  You are the eyes of what happened, learn what to include, what not to include, how to be BRIEF, CONCISE, and CLEAR in your write-ups.

Notes from ASA - The ASA - ASU (recreational division) allows 2 kinds of rosters to be turned in.  Teams can either turn in the traditional ASA form - with info filled in by hand or they can turn in the printed roster from GotSoccer.  Either one of these rosters is acceptable.

ASRA Board

President - Nick Wells
Vice President - Jose Pineda
Treasurer - Susana Valencia
Secretary - Ernie Villarreal
Director of Instruction - Ann Hicks
Director of Mentoring - Pete Reynolds/Allan Moore

Referee Appearance and Equipment
1. If you wear a shirt under your uniform...it's BLACK

2. Socks...referee socks only. Some of the younger refs will wear their team socks...please don't, get the referee sock with the stripes at the top or the newest style that have the stripe a bit above the ankle.

3. NO JEWELRY...it's a bit silly when at the coin toss, you remind players, no jewelry, but you or your AR has got on ear rings, or a bracelet...the NO JEWELRY rule applies to the refs. WEDDING RINGS are ok to wear.

4. Have paper and pen/pencil. Assistant Referees, you record the score, the misconduct, you keep a record of the match.

5. Get referee shorts. Females, wear them properly, don't role them at the waist. Males, have the proper length. Don't wear them just above the knees.

6. Wear a watch, preferably one that counts up/down...a digital watch.

7. Hair...NO MOHAWKS guys. Young men and women, if your hair is in your eyes, get a hair cut, we don't want you flipping your head from side to side. It's windy on the fields, even in good days, it's windy. Make sure you can see.

ASA points of emphasis that you need to know are different this year

1.  Sit outs - No longer does the player have to show up for his/her sit out. We just need to sign off on the sit out form. If the team mgr doesn't have the form, direct him/her to the ASA hut located by fields 15/17. They have forms on hand. You must sign the actual sit out form.

2.  All injuries were a player leaves the field, not to return, must be noted on the roster, this is not new. What ASA wants to know now...if you send off a player for Serious Foul Play, and in the event that the opponent/recipient of the SFP is injured and carried off the field, basically can't finish the match...MAKE A NOTE of this. ASA wants to know so they can follow up with these players coaches. They want to know if these injured players are out for a game or the season because of the nature of the foul. They want the info for their follow up process.

3.  The rosters are new this year for API, the competitive league. For league play, both teams are listed on one roster. You are to check both teams in, same as always.
Recreational games are still using 2 rosters..one for each team.

4.  In efforts to eliminate incorrect scores...whoever is the referee of the match, YOU record the score PLEASE. Too many incorrect scores reported last season, causing too much work for Ms. Wick and the ASA office staff. THANKS

Did you know: MISCONDUCTS & SEND OFFS

Always check with your league/assignor to see what is required of you for this part of your responsibilities.  Each association/league is different but all require something.  It's up to you to find out what is required of you in regards to paperwork.

If you've never written up a misconduct report or send off report, please click on "forms & documents" in the left hand column.  Under Referee Papers, you'll find exactly what you need to do/know...step by step.  We've posted the A & D presentation from '08.  FYI...A & D is ASA's Appeals & Discipline Officer, meaning, he's the one that gets the reports.  He's the one that needs to visualize what transpired during the match from your write up.  He and a few others determine the sit outs, suspensions, justice that is served up.  This is a very helpful tool, please use it.
