Wow, the tree memorial was cool, but seeing that building flooded me with memories ! It is strange to have a memory of a building and then to see it boarded up and dilapitated. I remember being sent to that exact building right before "Gut and Roachie" came to pick me up and take me to the Rock. Bob Lanphere came with us. Bob and I both arrived on the Rock on the same day.
It's funny, I arrived in Hanau with a girl who I went to AIT with at Ft. Knox. We were not sure where we would dropped off at when we arrived from Frankfurt. As she and I were both Track Vehicle Mechanics, we were awed that every place the bus stopped and dropped off a few new fresh cruits, that we saw NO tanks anywhere at any Kaserne! Every place we stopped, I would say(gleefully) , "Look, Donna, no tanks anywhere, no tanks!" We both were dropped off at that building. They told Donna, " You will be staying here at Bravo Co." They told me " You're going to the Rock" Two drunk guys (Gut and Roachie) picked up me and Lanphere. We drove and drove and drove and drove until we saw nothing but potato fields and farms. I'll never forget, as we drove over the hill to the back gate. Nothing but what seemed like millions of tanks. I slumped down in my seat a little, ...well ok,
I almost fainted...My luck, the largest Armored Army Brigade in the Free World!
I called my friend Donna a few days later. She told me there were no tanks in Hanau, so they put her to work in the PX, in the music section, even!
But you know what, guys? Even though we worked like crazy, I would never give up those wild and wooly times at the Rock! God Bless you all, my brothers and sisters! Wow, a photo sure can dredge up many memories....thanks to those who sent it and posted it.
